MARCH 2006 ISSUE 90

THE REAL GHOSTBUSTERS. Madcap scientists Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz and Egon Spengler decided to form a company specialising in supernatural invetsigations. Now, along withi Winston Zeddemore and their "pet" ghost Slimer, they protect the world from the miscvievous spirits - as The Real Ghostbusters! The phone's ringing off the hook.... It's another hectic day for our supernatural sleuths as they're called up to confront little devils, ancient myths, ghostly gangsters and spirited snacks that don't want to be munched for lunch! This frightfully exciting collection is packed with these and many more stories, plus the chance to bone up on your spooky knowledge with Spengler's Spirit Guides! It's just a shame these aren't full-size (A4) reprints of the original comics, which I used to read avidly with my two younger children - nevertheless, the stories are excellent and the artwork is great!

FABLES: OVER THE HILLS AND FAR AWAY - Having beaten back the Adversary's first advance into their world, the residents of Fabletown must now prepare themselves for the full-scale war that is sure to follow. For one particular Fable, this means skipping town to launch a new career as a venal Hollywood mogul - a path he hopes will be paved with gold and immortality. For another Fable, though, it means a journey down a much more dangerous road - one that winds through the Fables' old Homelands into the very heart of enemy territory, where the mystery of the Adversary's identity will finally be revealed! Features great artwork by Mark Buckingham, Steve Leialoha, David Hahn, Lan Medina and Dan Green. Reminiscent of the old Superman/Batman comics that used to be around in the 1950s.

RANN-THANAGAR WAR. THEIR CONFLICT IS DECADES OLD - The planet Thanagar, home to a predatory, militaristic civilisation, has long found itself in opposition with Rann, a world devoted to the unending pursuit of knowledge. For years, they have endured an uneasy, unsettled peace. But now, in a cruel twist of fate, Rann finds itself teleported into the Thanagarian planetary system, threatening the existence of both worlds and inflaming age-old hatreds. As tensions evolve into all-out war, heroes from both worlds - Hawkman and Adam Strange - unite to prevent genocide. If they fail, the conflict threatens to engulf other worlds in interstellar chaos. Alliances will be forged, friendships tested, and the balance of galactic power forever changed as the fate of two worlds is decided. Written by WATCHMEN co-creator Dave Gibbons and drawn by artists IVAN REIS and MARC CAMPOS (SUPERMAN) RANN-THANAGAR WAR is a story of a universe on the edge. Exceptional artwork, and a good story.

LEX LUTHOR - HERO FOR THE PEOPLE? Superman has been called many things since becoming a superhero, from the Defender of Truth, Justice and the American Way, to the Big Blue Boy Scout. In LEX LUTHOR: MAN OF STEEL, he is called something new: a dangerous threat to all humanity. Acclaimed writer Brian Azzarello, (SUPERMAN: FOR TOMORROW, 100 BULLETS) teams up with Lee Bermejo (BATMAN/DEATHBLOW) for a bold story in which readers get a rare glimpse into the mind of Lex Luthor. Long considered one of DC's most vile villains, MAN OF STEEL reveals why Luthor chooses to be the proverbial thorn in Superman's side - he intends to save humanity from an untrusted alien being. Again, exceptional artwork, but who in their right mind could ever think that Lex Luthor could ever be the hero?

STAR WARS TALES VOLUME 6 The vastness of the Star Wars galaxy hosts an unfolding mythology filled with character-driven stories of loss and tragedy, of heroismand redemption. Collected here are ten such tales - thrilling adventures that traverse and illuminate every era in the Star Wars mythos. From the life-affirming lessons of the Force to the moral and emotional fall-out that comes with giving oneself over to the ways of the Sith, these exhilarating stories will change the way you see that galaxy far, far away.  Various artists and writers, all brilliant, all different, a collector's item no Star Wars fan will want to be without.

STAR WARS: EMPIRE VOLUME FIVE - ALLIES AND ADVERSARIES A Galaxy full of trouble. Luke Skywalker fights side by side with a shipwrecked veteran from the Clone wars. Han Solo flirts with an old flame only to land in the fire, and BoShek, the Galaxy's second coolest smuggler attracts blaster fire from rebels and Imperials alike in this collection featuring some of the most unexpected stories in the era of the Empire! Whether it's BoShek transporting an innocent-enough looking girl, Han making a supply run for the resource-strapped Alliance, or Luke flying escort for a Rebel Intelligence Team on a supposedly deserted planet, these adventures may start as routine missions, but their endings are anything but predictable. Star Wars artists always seem to be among the bext in the comics business - this one's no exception.

STAR WARS: THE COMICS COMPANION. The Definitive Guide to the Illustrated Adventures of Star Wars. Comics and the Star Wars universe have shared a bond since the premiere of A NEW HOPE in 1977, reflecting and expanding on the stories and adventures of the heroes and villains that have captured the imagination of generations. Now, for the first time, this volume guides you thrugh the massive story line from the very beginning. More than just a timeline, the Companion takes you inside the evolution of the massive tapestry that has stretched across six films and hundreds of comics. It's all here: the rise and fall of the Sith, the collapse of the Old Republic, Anakin Skywalker's heroic beginnings and tragic descent into villainy as Darth Vader, and the years following his redemption at the hads of his son Luke. Comprehensive and exhaustively researched, this is a book no Star Wars fan can do without! That says it all for me - a brilliant collection of articles and illustrations on the biggest science fiction project ever undertaken. STAR TITLE for MARCH!

TEEN TITANS OUTSIDERS: THE INSIDERS BETRAYAL: Disturbing clues suggest that a traitor lurks within the Outsiders and they think it's INDIGO, the mysterious and beautiful android from the future. Before they cal learn who set her up to betray the team, the Outsiders receive a cry for help from the Teen Titans as their own traitor stands revealed - Superboy hiself. It's an all-out battle to save Superboy's soul, and to stop Indigo from completing her master's plan. In the end, several lives will be altered, and one team will stand on the precipice of destruction. Written by Geoff Johns (INFINITE CRISIS, GREEN LANTERN) and Judd Winick (BATMAN, GREEN ARROW), the six stories feature art by Matthew Clark (ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN), Carlos D'Anda (WILDCATS) and Tony Daniel (SPAWN). There are so many combinations of superheroes around now, JLA, JSA, Teen Titans, sometimes it's hard keeping track of who's who - but this volume sorts it out nicely with great art and storyline. I always used to think Superboy was the young Superman back in the 1950s when I first started reading Superman comics - now I' a little confused but just as hooked!

SUPERMAN: SACRIFICE - Superman is out of his mind - the ground-breaking prequel to INFINITE CRISIS!  The Man of Steel has been taken over by MAXWELL LORD, the sinister elader behind Checkmate and one of the main causes of the troubles facing Earth's metahuman community. Superman is forced to hallucinate, believing BRAINIAC, DARKSEID and RUIN are threatening his loved ones, when in actuality it's him who's causing the rampant destruction that nearly kills Batman. Only WONDER WOMAN has the strength to fight Superman and in the end, she must make a choice that will forever change how she is viewed by her peers. Acclaimed novelist GREG RUCKA is joined by GAIL SIMONE (ACTION COMICS) and MARK VERHEIDEN (SMALLVILLE) in chronicling this pivotal story. Illustrating it are some of the finest talents working today, including ED BENES, KARL KERSCHL, TONY DANIEL and JOHN BYRNE. Features a stunning cover by J G Jones who is next month's featured artist! Lately there have been some dire attempts to bring modern art to the Man of Steel, and I've said what I think of them. This volume is superb. The stories are good and the artwork stunning. It was the cover that grabbed me, however, and just wait till you see the fantastic gallery I have lined up for next month!

DC UNIVERSE: THE STORIES OF ALAN MOORE. For just a brief period of time, Alan Moore burst into the DC universe with a strong voice and a fresh perspective on its inhabitants, both heroes and villains. His stories went from the streets of Gotham City to the farthest reaches of the galaxy, from man's struggle with his inhumanity to the origins of its most enigmatic traveller. Now, for the first time ever, all of Alan Moore's super-heroic adventures are collected in one volume including the award-winning BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE and the beloved Superman tale, WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE MAN OF TOMORROW? Featuring collaborations with many of comics' greatest artists: JIM APARO - JIM BAIKIE - BRIAN BOLLAND - PARIS CULLINS - GEORGE FREEMAN - DAVE GIBBONS - KLAUS JANSON - KEVIN O'NEILL - JOE ORLANDO - GEORGE PEREZ - KURT SCHAFFENBERGER - CURT SWAN - RICK VEITCH - AL WILLIAMSON and BILL WILLINGHAM. What can you say about Alan Moore? The genius behind some of today's best comics. This one is a classic collection - one to keep!
